Reddit as a local search surface

How AI answers pick up peer recommendations, and how to be one.

The three AI surfaces local customers actually use, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, all weight Reddit threads as authentic peer-to-peer recommendation. Perplexity cites threads directly. AI Overviews often feature the top-upvoted comment.

A business named in five to ten positive Reddit threads beats a competitor with a better website and no Reddit presence, across every one of those platforms.

The part that compounds: a comment you leave today in a thread that ranks is still producing visibility two years from now.

Write comments with specifics in them

What gets upvoted on Reddit is the same thing a model reads as genuine firsthand experience. Specific service, specific price, specific detail.

The shape that works:

  • What you had done, and roughly when
  • The actual quoted price, and how it compared to other quotes
  • How the crew behaved, including cleanup
  • What the warranty or follow-up looked like

“Great company, highly recommend” reads as planted and gets ignored. No prices and no comparison points reads as generic. Vague positive comments are worse than no comment, because they pattern-match to fake reviews.

The top comment is the one Google shows

Google features the most-upvoted comment in the search snippet. Most local threads top out at 5 to 20 total upvotes, which is a very low bar to clear. Winning that slot puts the business name in search results before anyone clicks anything.

Target threads that already rank for “best service in city” queries.

Get there in the first few hours

City subreddits produce recommendation requests constantly. Somebody moves to town and needs a plumber. Somebody's AC dies. Being in the thread within two to four hours means more visibility and more upvotes than the same comment posted a day later.

Set a Google Alert scoped to reddit.com plus your city and service, and it comes to you.

Write your own posts

Own posts become permanent long-tail inventory and stay indexed. The format that works is a walkthrough of a real job: what you learned, how the options compared, what to ask before signing.

  • Real prices, real mistakes, real numbers
  • Before and after photos, which perform unusually well
  • Mention that you work in the trade in the comments rather than the post body

Ask customers, not employees

You already ask happy customers for Google reviews. Add Reddit to the same system. After a job, send the happiest ones a link to an active recommendation thread and ask if they'd mention you.

A short mention from a real account with real history outperforms anything you can post yourself. One or two a month compounds quickly.

Check whether it worked

Monthly, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the question a customer would ask, something like who to hire for a given job in your city. Ask new customers how they found you.

Results start showing at 60 to 90 days. Full compounding takes about six months.

Ways to get this wrong

  • Farming with branded accounts. Reddit's spam detection is real, and customer-sourced mentions are stronger anyway.
  • Pitching in the post body rather than the comments.
  • Commenting everywhere. Threads that will never rank don't matter. Filter to the ones that do.
  • Skipping the specifics, which is the whole mechanism.

One adjacent thing worth watching: old Facebook group posts are also turning up on page one. Not enough signal yet to build around, but the same specificity principle would apply.
